If you live in Banff, Canada you may recognize Mindy as the owner + instructor of Rocky Mountain Yoga studio. Here is where she integrates wellness through movement and creative pursuits. Since RMY's opening in 2009, Mindy has decorated its walls with her paintings and has sold and commissioned many pieces from the studio. Her love of creativity and yoga has developed over recent years to extend beyond the studio and incorporate opportunities for community paint classes and international art + yoga retreats.
Like many artists, Mindy has been drawing since she was able to hold a pencil. As a young girl from Winnipeg, she studied the pages of Sears catalogs to understand form and expression. Mindy took her artistic pursuits to post secondary education, exposing herself to graphic arts, and 2001 she attended Interior design at Mount Royal College. During this time she learned the foundations of color, perspective and composition. Over the years, Mindy has partaken in art studio clinics and has traveled to Italy to attend week long art workshops. She currently teaches and leads Art & Yoga Retreats Internationally to places like Tuscany and Provence.
About Mindy Johnstone
In 2019, Mindy included 2 trips to Morocco through an Eat Pray Move collaboration for retreats. She learned quickly that Yves St.Laurent was right - Marrakesh teaches you color and design! During these trips, Mindy hones her skills with pen and ink drawings to record her travels. Below are samples from Italy, France, Costa Rica and Tofino.
Today, Mindy pulls a lot of inspirations through bold, colorful and textured pieces. The Group of Seven is a constant inspiration for landscapes and the whimsical work of artist like Rod Charlesworth are a huge influence to her style. Painting runs in her family as well with her father being an avid painter, board member of the Winnipeg Art Forum and someone she seeks guidance from frequently! Mindy also enjoys teaching Paint Nights locally and for corporate events. Her intention is to rekindle the love of creativity that we sometimes release as we age. These sessions welcome students of all ages and are popular monthly events in Banff.
When she's not painting, Mindy loves to cook, cozy up with a book or enjoy the mountains. Her most quality time is spent laughing, playing and embarking on adventures with her daughter, Charly, her husband, Dave and Happy, the dog.
